In the aftermath of a damaging tornado, Oklahoma Baptist University embarked on a campus wide roof restoration effort to protect and preserve its historic campus.

Wallace Design Collective provided comprehensive roof consulting and project management services for Oklahoma Baptist University, supporting a campus-wide roofing initiative that began in May 2023 and continues on a part-time basis. Covering 54 buildings across OBU’s historic campus, the project included both steep- and low-slope roofing systems, such as clay tile, asphalt shingles, standing seam metal and various single-ply roof membranes.

Our role extended beyond traditional roof consulting to include strategic planning and construction coordination across a diverse and complex campus environment. We developed a detailed scope of work tailored to the unique characteristics of each building and worked closely with university stakeholders to review and evaluate contractor proposals. Our team assessed product data, installation methodologies, and specification compliance and conducted regular quality assurance site inspections to monitor progress and workmanship. We coordinated with seven different roofing contractors to manage approximately $20 million in construction activities.

A notable element of this project included oversight of repairs to the Raley Chapel steeple, one of the university’s most recognized landmarks. This involved the renovation of the copper cladding and internal gutter system, which required careful coordination to preserve both performance and aesthetics.

In addition to our roofing work, Wallace Design Collective provided structural engineering services following tornado damage sustained by Shawnee Hall. Our team conducted a full structural evaluation that identified isolated component and cladding damage but confirmed that the building’s primary structural system remained intact. Based on this assessment, the university moved forward with a full renovation of the facility. We supported this renovation by providing structural design services for multiple upgrades and repairs.

Together, these efforts reflect our firm’s integrated approach to building envelope consulting and structural engineering in support of long-term facility resilience.
