Osage Nation Veterans Memorial

The Osage Nation Veterans Memorial is a place of healing, community and remembrance of those who have served our country.
The Osage Nation had long envisioned a memorial to honor their veterans, and in 2011, the Osage Nation War Memorial Commission was formed to guide and oversee the project. By 2016, Wallace Design Collective was selected to lead the design and bring this vision to life. Initially conceived as a tribute to Osage war veterans, the project’s scope expanded to recognize all Osage warriors – living and deceased, in combat and in support roles – creating a comprehensive celebration of service and sacrifice.
At the heart of the memorial is a star-shaped arrangement of five black granite monuments, each representing a branch of the U.S. military. The monuments are engraved with the names of Osage veterans and feature the official crest of each service branch. A circular, stepped dais surrounds the star, etched with the names of conflicts in which Osage citizens have served, providing a space for reflection and commemoration.
Water plays a central symbolic and experiential role in the design. A curved water wall on the north side of the site alternates rough and smooth granite blocks, with cascading water creating a quiet, contemplative atmosphere. At the center of the wall, a polished panel carries the memorial’s dedication. Ten flagpoles line the upper level, displaying the flags of the United States, POW-MIAs, the Osage Nation, the State of Oklahoma, the five military branches and the 45th Infantry Division.
The focal point of the memorial is a 20-foot stainless steel feather rising from a circular granite base with water flowing over its surface – a powerful and enduring symbol of Osage warriors past and present. Surrounding the central star, personalized pavers purchased in honor or memory of loved ones support long-term maintenance of the site. Additional features include two smaller gazebos providing seating and shade along a future Osage interpretive trail, and a larger ceremonial gazebo for public gatherings and commemorative events.
Formally dedicated on Veterans Day 2018, the Osage Veterans Memorial serves as a place of remembrance, reflection and education, honoring the service of the Osage Nation’s warriors while fostering a meaningful connection between the memorial and the surrounding community.
