Bridging history and innovation, Shenandoah University transformed Virginia’s oldest active armory into the Hub for Innovators, Veterans and Entrepreneurs - a dynamic center for cutting-edge technology, workforce development and community collaboration.

KSi Structural Engineers, now part of Wallace Design Collective, provided structural engineering services for the renovation and rehabilitation of the 18,000 square foot armory. Originally built in 1940, the revitalized facility now houses a veterans’ center, job training programs and a business incubator.

Known as the HIVE, this facility houses programs in cybersecurity, data analytics, artificial intelligence and more, bringing new energy to a historic structure.

To support expanded programming, an elevated interior floor was added to accommodate cybersecurity and forensic labs, offices and meeting spaces. A new collaboration space was constructed outside the original footprint, featuring sloped steel trusses and a clerestory curtain wall. Inside, new openings in the existing masonry walls improve circulation and strengthen the connection between spaces.

Today, the HIVE serves as a regional innovation hub, supported by Shenandoah University in partnership with the Commonwealth of Virginia, the City of Winchester, regional counties, public schools and higher education institutions.
