Where community health meets purpose-built design on a historic campus.

In 2012, as part of its bold Wellness Revolution, Spelman College made a landmark decision to eliminate its Division III athletic program in favor of promoting health and wellness for the entire student body. As a result of this program, a new facility was envisioned to replace Read Hall, the school’s first gymnasium, constructed in 1951. The new Read Hall, situated on the historic campus oval, was completed ahead of the fall 2015 semester.

KSi Structural Engineers, now part of Wallace Design Collective, provided structural engineering services for the new wellness center. The two-story, 53,000 square foot facility includes a new performance gymnasium, four-lane swimming pool, wellness classroom and teaching kitchen, an indoor track, locker space, administrative offices and four multi-purpose rooms for dance, yoga, spin and other fitness activities.
