University of North Carolina Genetic Medicine Building

The Genetic Medicine Building is a state-of-the-art research building on the University of North Carolina campus.
Spanning a massive 333,000 square feet, the Genetic Medicine Building is one of the largest facilities on the University of North Carolina campus. KSi Structural Engineers, now part of Wallace Design Collective, provided structural engineering services for this premier research hub, which features an expansive one-acre floor plate.
Designed to house the School of Pharmacy and the departments of Genetics, Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Pharmacology, the structure is engineered to meet the stringent vibration and load requirements of high-level scientific research. The facility includes five floors of state-of-the-art laboratory space, two floors of specialized animal holding facilities and a dedicated mechanical penthouse. A full-service loading dock was integrated into the design to support the heavy logistical demands of a multi-departmental medical research complex.
