The Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes works with students and educators across diverse academic disciplines to develop history projects that highlight role models who demonstrate courage, compassion and respect regardless of race, religion or creed. These unsung heroes are individuals around the world who have taken extraordinary actions in their lives, but are not recognized publicly. Through the Center’s unique project-based learning approach, students discover, develop and communicate the stories of unsung heroes. By championing these stories, students, educators and communities discover their own power and responsibility to effect positive change in the world.

The Lowell Milken Center occupies the prominent corner of Main and Wall Streets in Fort Scott, Kansas, providing needed exhibit space and office. The building was placed on the site of a vacant lot where, in 2005, a devastating fire led to the loss of seven historic structures and damaged many properties, making a significant impact on the character defining elements of the historic downtown core along Main Street. The center features an exhibit gallery, conferencing facilities, offices and a 48-seat theater with bench seating. The exhibit area incorporates moveable displays as well as features a small performance theater highlighting the center’s purpose of telling the unsung hero’s story.
