Reinvigorating a historic arts facility to support performance, education and legacy.

Founded in 1881, Spelman College is internationally recognized for educating women of African descent and advancing academic excellence. At the heart of its Atlanta campus, the Rockefeller Fine Arts Building has housed the college’s art, drama and music programs since 1964. In 2024, the building underwent a comprehensive renovation, transforming it into a modern center for performance and learning while honoring its cultural and historical significance. The facility now features the LaTanya Richardson Jackson and Samuel L. Jackson Performing Arts Center, celebrating the contributions of two distinguished artists closely tied to the college.

KSi Structural Engineers, now part of Wallace Design Collective, provided structural engineering services for extensive upgrades, including hazardous material abatement, modernized systems, renovated restrooms and dressing rooms, expanded storage and improved climate control. The renovation also delivered flexible, move-in-ready spaces, including a revitalized proscenium theater, a black box theater and a new two-story glass lobby that serves as a welcoming gathering space and showcases a mural honoring the history of the Morehouse-Spelman Players.

Through careful coordination of modern infrastructure and historic preservation, the renovated performing arts center strengthens Spelman College’s commitment to the arts, creating an inspiring environment for students, faculty, and audiences for generations to come.
