View ProfileAt Wallace Design Collective, we believe the “doer-seller” mentality is the key to unlocking professional growth and company success. This approach goes beyond technical expertise – it’s about leveraging that knowledge to create opportunities and build lasting client relationships.
The Foundation: Technical Expertise
The journey to becoming a technical expert starts long before entering the workforce. Countless hours are spent honing our skills in classrooms and through experience. Engineers dedicate themselves to mastering their chosen field, culminating in passing rigorous licensing exams. This dedication provides the foundation for our success.
Beyond the Technical: Communication and Soft Skills
While technical proficiency is essential, the doer-seller thrives by excelling in communication and soft skills. Engineering stereotypes often portray us as introverted, lacking social finesse. However, cultivating self-awareness and a commitment to personal growth empowers us to overcome these perceptions.
We structural engineers get an unfair reputation of being dream killers.
A good structural engineer is crucial for ensuring design feasibility. It isn’t easy to communicate to an architect or client that their dream design requires some modifications. Engineers need to learn the amazing soft skill of communicating the understanding of the design intent to an architect and working with the architect to determine the best solution to bringing their design to life.
This requires mastering the “soft skill” of clear and empathetic communication. Like any skill, it takes practice. Early in my career, I spent many years attending social events to practice my soft skills. I classified it as dedicating myself to personal growth. After years of attending events, I found that forming long-term relationships is the most effective way to overcome this obstacle.
Building Strong Relationships: The Key to Long-Term Success
Building strong relationships is a cornerstone of our industry. It’s important to remember that not every connection will lead to immediate financial gain. Relationships take time and effort to cultivate, and rewards often come years later, so don’t give up!
Many of our recent graduates have a degree in Architectural Engineering, which means they took several studio classes with the Architecture students. I like to tell our recent graduates to keep in touch with the friends they made in school because While these classmates may not be decision-makers today, their future influence can be significant. Maintaining these relationships positions you for potential partnerships down the line.
